how to split a word and get the first index value in component

hi,i had a word like this “12345 - Data min”, i need to split this word based on - operator and get the first word.I had another requirement like split and save the words in another varaibleex : select * from emp;select * from customerquery variable should have splitted value like select * from empcan you help in implementing above scenario
